Workshop Shanghai

The workshop in Shanghai was amazing! I had 23 participants who worked their asses off. Very nice people, mostly from China and the Netherlands. Lots of talent.

The theme of the World expo is “Better city, better life”. The Dutch pavilion is called “Happy street”.

Singer/songwriter Wotienke wrote her song “City Stories” especially for the workshop. She wrote it in Amsterdam and recorded it with her band in Pržno (Czech). The workshop was organised in The Hague and held in Shanghai. Participants came from Amsterdam, Groningen, Bergen, Shanghai, Taiwan, Beijing, Kasinger, Lanzhou, Zhengzhou, Toronto and more.
They all animated their own city stories for the music video.

The workshop was part of the “Don’t believe the type” event, organised by graphic design studio Trapped in Suburbia. There were also workshops by Yomar Augusto and Underware and lectures by Trapped in Suburbia, Yomar and Underware and an exposition with type from the Hague, that also contained some of my letters.

It was a very long, but great day. I met some beautifull people.

On the 18th of may I’ll be giving a workshop during the World Expo in Shanghai, at the ‘Don’t Believe the Type’ festival.

‘Don’t Believe the Type’ is a one day typographic festival,
initiated by Dutch design agency Trapped in Suburbia.
This year it will be held on the 18th of May in Shanghai and
will focus on the typographic excellence from The Hague.

This day will be packed with workshops, lectures and visual
excitement provided by Underware , Yomar Augusto,
Rogier Wieland and Trapped in Suburbia.

Handmade typographic music video
A workshop for twenty participants working together to
produce a handmade typographic music video in one day.

Using only analog media (and a digital still camera), we’re
going to make a typographic music video for a brand new
song by Dutch singer/songwriter Wotienke. She will write
and record the song especially for this occasion.

Each participant produces his own part of the music video
by animating typographic elements, without a computer.
That means 25 frames per second, all handmade! We are
going to focus mainly on adding “life” to our animations.
At the end of the day all animations will be edited to the
final music video.

From the 23rd of January untill the 25th of April 2010 the music video “Whatcha Got” will be screened as part of the “De Fantasie Fabriek - Animatie in Nederand” (The Fantasy Factory - Animation In Holland) exposition in the Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch (Holland).

I’ll be one of the participants of the “Don’t Believe The Type” exhibition in the Ship Of Fools Gallery in The Hague.
The video I made for this exhibition is called “Don’t Believe The Tape”. It’s a short stopmotion animation made with adhesive tape on the kitchen window.

Yasuní-ITT

Santiago del Hierro is an architect from Ecuador who is currently a researcher at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht and works on urban development patterns in Ecuador and Peru’s Amazon region. He asked me to help him produce an infographic video about the Yasuní-ITT, a remarkable project from Ecuador that proposes a new alternative to avoid oil extraction in the Yasuní National Park.

On the left you can see a very short excerpt of the video.

Animated pop-up scenery

We made this 4 second loop of an animated pop-up scenery cut out of plain 80 grams paper at 25 frames per second.

It’s just a try-out to see how it would look like.

On the pictures below the video you can see the 100 paper frames that were cut out for the shots.

The Pinc conference was amazing! Very inspiring and very well organised. It was a lot of fun and I met some interesting people.

It was all impressing: The amazing stories of Joshua Klein, the hilarious tv-moments of television presenter/producer Martin Heylen, the extraordinary example of what cooperation can achieve by Tiina Urm, the brilliant Designers Accord by Valerie Casey, the small and big surprises, the first speaker, Seth Shostak, with a wonderful presentation about the chances that alien life exists, the sad announcement that former speaker Ben Underwood past away, Bas Heijne with his explanation of his favourite painting, the delicious breakfast, lunch and diners (and food in between), the impressive exhibition designs by Peter Slavenburgs NorthernLight...

Animation workshop

We gave an animation workshop on elementary school Nutsschool Boldingh in The Hague.

The first lesson the children made a flip book animation. The second lesson we made animations with the children as subjects and the last lesson all children made a paper cut out stopmotion animation of there own names.

Car animation

My interns Daan & Yoeri made a very short animation of a car that has an accident.

In fact they rotoscoped each frame of this scene we played of the PS3 game Burnout Paradise. We wanted to see how typicle hand drawings and 3d physics combined would look like.

Today I received my 2008 Red Stick Animation Festival Trophy for Best Music Video for the video for “Whatcha got” by Trenchcoat.

I’m so proud!
